  • Heritage of Putnam County, TN - 2008, Page 116: Ira served in the Civil War as a Private. Somehow, he was injured and suffered with a hernia which eventually caused his death. When the hernia protruded, Ira pushed it back in and continued on this way, whether plowing or otherwise tending his crops. One day in 1871 he was unable to position the intestines that protruded. He was quite a distance from home and by the time he got there gangrene had set up and he died shortly thereafter.
