The Allison Stand

In the 1870s, the Allison homeplace (known as the Allison Stand and later the Isbell Stand) was located nine miles West of Cookeville along the road to Chestnut Mound. A few yards East of the House was the Sparta Road. In the present day, the Allison Stand is approximately located was located near the Victorian Gardens Retirement Community which sits near the intersection of Nashville Highway (Highway 70N) and 1st Avenue in Baxter, Tennessee.

The house was described as double log cabin with an open hall way between the two cabins. The cabin where the shooting occurred consisted of a bedroom where Amanda Allison and Amanda Pippin were asleep in the same bed, a dining room where Jo Allison was sleeping, and directly over the main bedroom and upstairs bedroom where Russ Allison and Arch Bryant were sleeping. There was a set of stairs that connected the upstairs bedroom with main bedroom.

The bed that Angeline Allison and Amanda Pippin were sleeping in was located to the right of the door that Russ opened the night of the murder. The door opened to the back of foot of the bed. There was a small table to the left of the door. The door to the room Russ was killed in was located next to the Hall. There was another door that opened into the dining room where Jo Allison slept.

Hog Joe and his first wife, Elizabeth, raised their children at the Allison home. After Elizabeth's death, Hog Joe married Angeline Beasely, and she became Step-Mother to Julius, Russ, and Jo Allison, who were still living at home with their father. After his death, Hog Joe left a Will dated 21 October 1873 which gave the Allison Stand and 300 acres of lands surrounding it to Angeline. While Julius married and moved out of the house, Russ and Jo continued to live with their Step-Mother until their respective deaths.

After Russ was murdered in 1875, Jo died in 1879, and James Isbell died in 1880, Angeline Isbell continued to live there until about April 1891. Under a decree of the County Court of Putnam County, Angeline was forced sell the house and the 300 acres to James H. Lee, a doctor, on 4 April 1891 for $450 (about $11,500 in 2012 dollars) [Putnam County, Tennessee Deed Book P, Page 542]. On 2 December 1892, James deeded the house and land over to his wife, Mattie Lee [Putnam County, Tennessee Deed Book O, Page 518].

James died on 13 May 1904 and is buried on the property currently owned by his wife, Mattie.
